I created it when I was a student, and it was later selected and printed by the Iranian Post Organization as a featured stamp. The concept came from Sabzeh, one of the seven symbolic elements of the Haft-Seen table for Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Sabzeh is made by sprouting wheat seeds, allowing them to grow into fresh green blades of grass that represent renewal, life, and the arrival of spring. I wanted to capture this sense of natural growth and simplicity using colored pencils, a medium that allowed me to express softness and texture, almost like the feel of real wheatgrass.

At the base of the Sabzeh, I added a red ribbon, a small but powerful cultural detail. Traditionally, people tie the grown wheat with a ribbon before placing it on the Haft-Seen table. I chose red intentionally because when combined with the green of the grass and the white negative space around it, it subtly forms the colors of the Iranian flag. For me, this combination was not just aesthetic. It connected nature, tradition, and identity in a single, minimal composition. This project reminded me how design can communicate deep cultural meaning through simplicity, and how a small image like a postage stamp can hold the story of an entire season and a nation’s sense of renewal.

A student project that became an official Iranian postage stamp, this design is inspired by Sabzeh, a key symbol of Nowruz and renewal.
